Cadlillac Gets Volt Technology From Chevrolet

Chevrolet has made a big push to promote their Volt and more than likely you have probably heard of it. Fitted with both an innovative EV system and gasoline-powered, four-cylinder engine, it delivers drivers a 35-mile, pure-electric range and the flexibility to go the distance, when owners need it.

What you might not have heard of yet is the forthcoming ELR hybrid from Cadillac. Based on the Converj coupe, which was unveiled two years ago in Detroit, it's about to hit the production line.

Wondering what this has to do with the Chevy Volt? Well, for one Chevy and Caddy are sister companies. Secondly, the Volt and the ELR are both hybrids. And last, but not least, the Crowned Shield will integrate the ELR with the same powerhouse featured in the Volt: a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, range-extending generator and four-cylinder engine.

While Chevy's T-shaped lithium-ion battery is currently exclusive to the Volt, the fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, which will also be fitted in the ELR, is found in numerous Chevrolet cars, including the  2011 Chevrolet Aveo (available as a four-door sedan or sportier five-door hatch) and 2011 Chevrolet Cruze (award-winning, four-door sedan). Extremely fuel efficient, it's ideal as a backup for an EV system and fully capable of offering competitive fuel economy on its own.
